Often patients wanting an otoplasty procedure are one of our youngest patients we see. Prominent ears that protrude from the side of the head, asymmetrical or misshapen ears that cause a patient concern are candidates for this type of surgery. This procedure tends to have a high satisfaction rate and very little complications associated with it. MSP currently covers this procedure if the patient meets the criteria up to the age of sixteen.
The otoplasty procedure is done as day surgery under a general anaesthetic. In adults the procedure can be easily done under local with or without sedation. Results are achieved by reshaping the cartilage by making incisions behind the ears so scars are well hidden. Recovery is about 10-14 days and a head wrap is worn at night for a few weeks after.
