Eyelid
surgery is performed to correct problems of sagging skin
over the eye and bags under the eye due to sun damage, aging
or genetics. An incision is used for upper lid surgery which
is hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelid.
Because the incision follows the contour of the upper
eyelid, it will be well camouflaged when it is healed.
Two
approaches are used when performing lower lid surgery: one
uses an external incision hidden below the lower lashes, and
the other is performed from inside the lower lid and is
called a transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty. Excess
skin, muscle and fat are removed. Fat may also be
redistributed to eliminate puffiness or bulges. Your age and
the extent of the fatty deposits you have will determine
which approach is used. Recovery usually involves some
swelling and bruising which may resolve as quickly as seven
to ten days. In some cases mild swelling may persist for
several weeks.
